First, the good news. A lot of us have been hearing rumors on and off about Sega and Obsidian rebirthing the Aliens vs. Predator game franchise by developing a shooter and an RPG built around the cult series. As of now, it’s officially confirmed and the best part, is that UK-based developer Rebellion, who created the first AvP masterpiece, is back on track working on the new shooter.
As always, sadly, there’s a catch. Fans like yours truly, who have been waiting for Sega/Monolith to use the Jupiter EX engine (F.E.A.R., Condemned: Criminal Origins) to power the new AvP game have been kicked in the teeth. First, the game is being made for the PSP, and second, it’s a third person shooter. Sure, I love the idea of being able to play an AvP game wherever I am, but the series is built around scaring the living crap out of people as they play, which is downright impossible with the PSP version, as far as I can see, unless you start playing it at 1 AM with the lights out. And even then, a third person shooter? The game’s claustrophobic atmosphere is best felt in first person mode, navigating dimly lit corridors as the motion detector in your hand goes completely berserk. And you thought you heard the worst news? Hah! Think again, for the game will be based on the Alien vs. Predator 2 movie that is scheduled to hit theaters sometime around Christmas. I think I’ll go and try to drown myself in a bucket of water now.
