GAME ON Event

Maybe it’s just my total lack of enthusiasm for social gatherings when it means I have to travel long distances, or how stupidly single I am right now (Oh!) – but I’m not a fan of discos, clubbing, or late night drinking at the local pub. That’s more or less because of the company you bring along or the people you’ll involuntarily run into sometimes, which in itself depends a lot on how much liquor everyone’s been downing until it comes out like an exquisite river of dead puke. That’s why I’m glad Microsoft India was able to handle their recent Game On Event in New Delhi so darned well. Taking place in The Pyramid, a lot of the attention was focused on what people like me come 40 miles for - some cold, hard time with BioWare’s dandiest offering on consoles since Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. And luckily, the free liquor surely soothed some of that pain for the disagreeable on-lookers present, minus the aforementioned puking sessions. Bonus!

With no less than ten Xbox 360 kiosks and two Vista PCs running all the way in the back, there was a heavy selection of stuff to taste right off the platter. Finding some poor soul to play with, thankfully, wasn’t as much of a problem this time. After all, we’re not too happy if we can’t beat up some innocent gamer-initiate into submission in Halo 3. Other than the floor-stealer, Mass Effect, taking the helm of attention-seekers (on large projected screens, no less), there were other noticeable games present, some of which are likely available for retail here in India already. Other than Microsoft’s own Project Gotham Racing 4, Gears of War PC, and Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties – Electronic Arts also had some of their latest wares on display, including The Orange Box, FIFA08, Need for Speed: ProStreet, The Simpsons Game, SKATE! and next year’s upcoming co-op shooter, Army of Two.

When we finally got to talk to Mohit for a bit, we asked him about the recent string of announcements relating to Xbox Originals, and if it made sense to have something like that made available without the official presence of the 120 GB hard drive. It’s not like he’s oblivious to it either, it’s just not something he seems to have control over. “If everything could be done my way, I’d release the 120 GB accessory tomorrow,” he said, while we wondered who we could bash up for this SNAFU.

Thankfully, Mohit and Sanjoy pulled out a copy of Halo 3 for some 4-player split-screen Slayer lovin’ on the projector screen, allowing us to butcher random strangers that had gathered there. Reggie and I played the first four matches (Mohit stuck around for the first two, mowing people down with the Mongoose and the Ghost), while other members from the press took turns every round or so. Needless to say, I’ve had more competition from an opened can of tuna.

And although we are not permitted to disclose any info on how Army of Two faired (not after we signed the nice dotted line, see?), Mass Effect is a wonderful exception. That’s because from today onwards, you should be seeing it arrive across retail stores! As much as we’d like to gush about our nothing-but-positive notions and overzealous tingly-feelings that squirm inside our butterflied-stomachs, we feel its best we save our anecdotes for the final review. Trust us, we don’t want to spoil a thing for you. But if you don’t mind just a teensy weensy one, scope out the video Reggie threw up together from the party. It’s simply gamer-ific! Shaky cam never had it this good!
