Whenever a conversation on videogame genres veers towards survival horror, one name invariably jumps to everyone’s mind: the Resident Evil series. For more than a decade, Resident Evil has been getting us to wet our pants with embarrassing frequency. Even after taking a surprisingly action oriented approach with the fourth game in the series, Capcom still managed to get us to soil our pants again. However, is Resident Evil’s first foray into hi-definition going to make us buy a new pair of trousers again? It did not take us long to find the answer as we popped in the disc in our Xbox 360 on a chilly, rainy evening.
Raccoon City is now long in the past but the abominations from the Umbrella Corporation labs have fallen in all kinds of wrong hands, most worrisome of which seem to be those of a terrorist organization with links to a doomsday project known as the Uroboros. You step into the shoes of Chris Redfield, now working for the B.S.A.A., an organization tasked with cleaning up the mess that the Umbrella Corporation left behind in its wake. Thankfully, you don’t have to be alone while you shotgun your way through horde after horde of ugly, undead zombies. Covering your back as you traverse through zombie infested villages is the smoking hot Sheva Alomar, a local B.S.A.A agent. You also get to meet a few old friends and enemies along the way.
Taking a cue from RE4, Resident Evil 5 (RE5) continues to stick to its newly formed action-oriented roots. Aiming is from an over-the-shoulder view a la RE4, giving you a better aim at the no-longer-slowly-shuffling zombies; these buggers can be lightning fast when they want. However, it is not that hard to anticipate their rush, lower the gun and side-step. Yes, you still cannot move while aiming. But then that is something that every Resident Evil fan knows by now. The run-and-gun crowd may have some trouble adapting to it but once you do, popping a few rounds into a zombie’s head and see it explode in a crimson mess is always worth the effort. A variety of enemies, from the infected villagers on foot and on bikes to giant axe wielding abominations will be let loose on you.
