I really enjoyed the first Call of Juarez game when it was released in 2006. The game was set in 19th century Wild West, a setting rarely used in shooters which seem to be content with sticking to generic themes where you are either fighting aliens or shooting Nazi’s for the umpteenth time or gunning down mutants and zombies. Call of Juarez on the contrary, was a refreshing change. It helped that it was my first foray in this type of a genre as well. Needless to say, I was impressed.
Techland did a pretty good job with the game which received mostly positive reviews. The visuals were really good (though there were performance issues), the story was decent and the impressive soundtrack greatly complimented the amazing voice acting. The two lead characters were well drawn out and it was interesting to play the game from both their perspectives, switching from one character to the other as we followed their adventures. While I liked playing the stealthy Billy Candle missions, it was the character of Reverend Ray that impressed me the most. The Bible wielding, gun slinging Reverend was a complete badass, spouting choice quotes from the Bible while gunning down enemies with his trusty six-shooters. Many gamers and reviewers found the Billy Candle missions to be a tedious affair since they involved a lot of stealth and frustrating platforming elements but very little shooting. On the other hand, Reverend Ray got to gun down enemies in shootouts, pursuing outlaws and facing off in gun duels. I guess this probably is why I ended up liking the Ray character much more than Billy. Techland aims to improve upon the original by focusing more on the “shooting parts” by getting rid of the stealth elements, while retaining some of the platforming, in their upcoming prequel to Call of Juarez called Call of Juarez – Bound in Blood.
