The story in this prequel is set some 20 years before the first game at the time of the American Civil War and follows the adventures of the enigmatic Reverend Ray and his brothers Thomas (Billy’s step father in the first game) and William. Techland calls it “an epic western tale of greed and honor, jealousy and betrayal, violence and redemption.” The story this time seems interesting enough. It begins with the brothers (Ray and Thomas) fighting for the Southern Union against the Northern Troops in the American civil war, where they choose to ignore the direct orders of their Commanding Officer and instead desert the army to save their family. Thereon in the brothers are always on the run, creating trouble and causing mayhem wherever they go.
Like the previous game, the prequel also has two playable characters; that of Ray and Thomas. Almost throughout the game, save for some specific levels, you have the option to play as either of the two depending on your playing style. The characters have their own individual skills. Ray is the stronger of the two and specializes in close combat. He also has the ability to dual wield and can throw dynamite sticks. Thomas, on the other hand, is the nimbler of the two and is an expert at long-range combat. He also has the ability to scale walls, is adept in the use of the lasso and can use bows and throwing knives with equal ease. These individual skills are useful in certain parts of the game where the brothers have to work co-operatively to progress. While most of the game has you playing side by side with your brother, there are a few sections where the two split up and take different paths. Inspite of all this, sadly the game does not feature co-op – something which I was expecting. Techland explains that the way the story has been set-up doesn’t allow for co-operative gameplay.
