BEST USE OF A CREATIVE LICENSE

Usually when a company takes over a creative license, such as something based off a popular movie or a novel, the end result is absolutely terrible. However, very rarely, someone is able to use this creative license and create a work of art out of it, such as Knights of the Old Republic or The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. This year, we’ve seen hundreds of games based on such licenses, but not a lot of them even qualify to be included here. Our very short list includes…

The Nominees

Best Use of a Creative License - Nominees

And the winner is…

Best Use of a Creative License - Winner - The Simpsons Game

Sure, its no Hit & Run, but the Simpsons family’s first run through the HD world has been one awesome trip. Spouting original one-liners instead of quipping those from the show, our favorite yellow-skinned, 4-fingered dysfunctional American family’s (mis)adventures in trying to stop Springfield from going to the dogs pushes it to the top of the list when nothing else comes close to recreating the same effect of the show. Sure, the platforming suffers at times and co-operative play can get a little tedious, but all those funnies and typical Simpsons-ey hijinks more than make up for the obvious flaws in the gameplay.

Runner-Up:

LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga

If we hadn’t already played through both the first LEGO Star Wars and The Original Trilogy, we would have most certainly crowned this baby king of this category without a moment’s hesitation. But, sadly, even though the games are absolutely spectacular and great fun to play through, this doesn’t really bring anything new to the table apart from a few extra goodies and getting to play through all six Episodes in HD LEGO hilarity. But still, all the hours of fun that it provides elevates it beyond all the other licensed trash that filled up this year and gives us hours upon hours of fun fighting Darth Vader as Anakin Skywalker.
