BEST NEW CHARACTER(S)

Thanks to the fact that none of our digital crushes really exist, it’s hard to get attached to a character in a game and care about what happens to them. Yet, time and time again, we fall in love with some of the most iconic characters that define a particular game in such a way that they are the first thing that come to mind when you think about that game. Introducing, some of the newest memorable characters that debuted this year. We hope to see more of you in the coming years.

And the winner is…

Best New Character - Winner - GLaDOS: Portal

GLaDOS, the Aperture Science, Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System that’s “arguably alive” has to be one of the most endearing characters we have ever come across in all our years of gaming. Guiding us through one Test Chamber after another, poking, prodding and lying to us with every third word spoken, this passive-agressive AI, voiced to perfection by Ellen McLain, easily beats every other character that has been introduced this year. Behaving, for the most part, like a 16-year teenage mother, GLaDOS has an affinity for cake that is so contagious that we actually can’t stop talking about the damn cakes ever since we started playing this game.

Fewer characters have made us fall completely in love with something that’s constantly trying to bump us off, even though we get the feeling we are actually being tested for a greater purpose that she knows but won’t tell us. We miss her humor and sarcasm already and hope we get to see her soon in Portal 2 or in some form in the next Half-Life 2 episode.

The Runners-Up:

The Polite Turrets – Portal

It just doesn’t feel right including two characters from the same game, but these little, shiny, oblong death-machines deserve to be here more than anyone else. This is the first (and probably the only) time we’ve seen a lifeless entity programmed to kill us exhibit so much personality. Sure, they’re all out to kill you, but just because that’s their job doesn’t mean they can’t be polite and apologetic about the whole morbid affair. Needless to say, these extremely humorous lil’ things actually managed to put the widest smiles on our faces when it started spouting lines like “Would you come over here?” before shredding you to pieces with a “Goodbye” and shutting down with “Naptime”. Never have we felt so much joy and a tinge of sorrow when we had to kill these little things, even as they let out a sorrowful, hurt “Whyyy?”

Altair – Assassin’s Creed

A disgraced assassin rising back among of the ranks of a secret, assassin brotherhood has to be a good enough reason to like anyone. But Altair sets himself apart from all the other characters we’ve seen as we travel with him to stick a dagger into the throats of everyone profiting from warmongering in medieval times. With the trilogy just beginning, we can’t wait to see more of Altair and his journey towards the Holy Grail unfold.
