BEST ORIGINAL MUSIC

Although shiny new graphics manage to hog most of the limelight with the release of any game, it’s heartening to note that the game’s score doesn’t get left behind as something to tune out with a custom soundtrack. It will be foolhardy to expect that the gamer will not notice something is amiss if the developers try to pass off barely-average music in what is otherwise a very good game. The choice of music makes all the difference between a game level being just another level or something that will leave you white-knuckled with a pounding heart and a dry mouth. Here then are the nominees that have made us sit on the main menu for half an hour just to listen to the music or play through levels over and over again just to hear that fantastic score yet another time.

The Nominees

And the winner is…

Best Original Music - Winner - Halo 3

With the immensely talented duo, Martin O’Donell and Michael Salvatori on board once again for Halo 3, it has wowed us with some of the best in-game music we have ever heard in a game. Music, in Halo 3, is easily one of the strongest points of the game. Sweeping orchestral scores set the mood as you enter into combat, making you that much more determined to finish the fight this time around. The Halo theme in itself is enough to give you goose-bumps as you come to terms with what a mammoth tasks lies ahead of you. And if the pumping theme wasn’t enough to send adrenaline coursing through your bloodstream, the emotionally hanting pieces such as the Halo 3 version of Unforgotten made you just want to listen to them over and over again. There is nothing better then the music to drive home the point that the fate of the entire galaxy lies in your hands. With its cinematic and powerful score, Halo 3 deserves the top spot in this category.

The Runners-Up:

God of War II:

God of War II did provide quite a challenge to Halo 3 when it came down to the best original music. GoW II with it’s fast paced orchestral scores were just perfect for the kind of gore-fest that was going on, on the screen all the time. As the action on screen heated up, the choral singing would keep pace with it and then slowly disappear back into the background once Kratos has dispatched his enemies to their rightful place. It managed to bring out the character of Kratos very well, highlighting the inner rage that was fueling Kratos as he disemboweled his enemies and tore them in two. In the end, it lost out to Halo 3 on the basis of the sheer scale of it all. But it was an extremely worthy competitor all the way.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat has been in the limelight mainly for its spectacular graphics and the cinematic moments but all these would have paled had the soundtrack been ordinary. However, Infinty Ward paid special attention to that aspect and we were treated to some of the best sequences where the background music would gel perfectly with the intense fire-fights on–screen. The music of COD4 complimented the cinematic feel of the whole game brilliantly, but not quite enough to make it rise all the way to the top.
