GotY 2007

BEST GRAPHICS (TECHNICAL)

Gone are the days when gamers used to be overjoyed if they got a nice little background image in their games. Today’s gamers demand more and more quality in the visual department and they don’t want to see a performance drop for all the gorgeous eye candy that they get. With DirectX 10 slowly gaining ground, today’s HD hungry crowd needs cutting edge graphics to draw them into the game and keep them there. Here are the games of 2007 that forced us to drop our jaw and let our tongues roll all over the floor in awe.

The Nominees

Best Graphics (Technical) - Nominees

And the winner is…

Best Graphics (Technical) - Winner - Crysis

There’s no doubt as to who should win this one. With Far Cry setting new standards in graphics long before Doom III and Half-Life 2 emerged bickering, the newest CryEngine 2 from Crytek has set yet another standard in graphics technology like its predecessor. Bringing even the most advanced hardware to its knees, begging for mercy, Crysis is at least two years ahead of its time, sporting some of the most breathtaking visuals ever seen in a videogame. This DirectX 10 poster-child and PC exclusive whopper wins this award hands down and stomps all over its competitors with the most detailed textures and real-time lighting and shadowing effects.

The Runners-Up:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

While Crysis has no competition in the looks department, it is sorely wanting when it comes to performing on even super-powered systems. But Call of Duty 4 on the other hand, looks fantastic, has some of the best lighting and shadowing effects seen in a DX 9 game and sports some of the sharpest textures seen on a console this side of Uncharted.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune

Which brings us, quite neatly, to what could easily be the best-looking game on the Sony PlayStation 3. This little treasure mine from Naughty Dog, who worked graphics wonders on the PlayStation 2 with the Jak and Daxter franchise, show what the PS3 is really capable of, with some of the most exquisite vegetation ever seen outside a photograph and the sharpest textures we have ever seen on a console. It’s absolutely pathetic that what is the greatest game for the console is being ignored by fans who’d rather sit around and argue as to whether Killzone 2 footage is prerendered instead of playing what is unarguably the best damned game on the platform until now. If there’s any doubt in anyone’s mind as to what the PS3 is capable of, this is a great sample of things to come.
