We <3 Jade Raymond!

Jade Raymond, producer of Assassin’s Creed, is one sad panda these days. And if Jade ain’t happy, UbiSoft is mad. After all, she and her team delivered one spectacular baby in the form of Assassin’s Creed. And if UbiHulk goes all green, it’s very bad news for Something Awful, which found itself staring down the barrel of a lawsuit after someone posted a particularly tasteless comic of Jade trying to convince nerdy gamers to buy Assassin’s Creed by giving them really messy head. While I love SA.com’s reply to the lawsuit and think that’s what you deserve for being a lawyer, I am aghast at some of the comments made by gamers worldwide in response to this.

Suddenly, people are calling Jade “a touchy bitch” and talk about how she was using her sex appeal to sell the game , to how UbiSoft was pimping her to sexually frustrated gamers to get them to buy the game. One comment at ActionTrip even reads:

Ubisoft are the ones who blatantly exploited Jade Raymond’s good looks and sexuality; every single interview on AC I’ve seen building up to the game’s release, every single presentation was carried out by Ms. Raymond.

I don’t understand this rampant craziness at all! Doesn’t the producer / lead developer usually talk about the game at every event? Jade is doing for Assassin’s Creed what Gabe did for Half-Life 2, or Cevat for Crysis or Frank O’Connor for Halo 3. It’s not like UbiSoft fell in love with her face and boobs and ass and said, “Ooh, she looks fine! Let’s put her in charge of the game!” Jade’s got a degree in computer science and has programmed games for Sony and produced more games for EA before moving to UbiSoft and Assassin’s Creed.

Yes, being hot and sexy helps, but she got the job because she’s qualified enough to handle it. If the case were otherwise, I am sure Ubi would have found a much hotter brunette with 36DD tits to produce their million-dollar AAA game, not Jade. And what the fuck is this crap about Jade selling the game because she is sexy? Seriously, how many people actually bought Assassin’s Creed because of Jade? If I buy a game, it’s because I like it, not because I think its producer is the very definition of “sexy”. Nuh-uh, you ain’t getting my $60 that way!

With most sites giving rave reviews to the game (except for some sad, misguided people), it’s hilarious and yet, disturbing, as to how someone could claim something like this so callously. She and her team did a great job with Assassin’s Creed. If you can’t at least give her a pat on the back, at least stop making comics of her being splooged on by perverted gamers.

You hang in there, girl, some of us have got your back!

hear hear. Shame what some people will do for a cheap thrill these days. Whatever happened to reading good ol’ Calvin & Hobbes or Bound & Gagged for a good laugh!

But this is all in poor taste and is so blatantly sexist! Funny thing that people in the west have this notion abount Indians being gender biased and not treating the fairer sex as equals - but wait - look who’s got Jade’s back here!!!

This is really bad…didn’t expect this. This was in really bad taste. If I had to blame someone, it would be the media, yeah of course we agree Jade is kinda cute and all, but at the end of the day she is a game developer…cute…or not cute.

And i’d really like to blame Kotaku if I can, almost every single post about Assassins Creed has to have a lousy quip at Jade. I remember one of the posts about GDC has them whining that Jade didnt remember their name…WHAT THE FUCK?

Who the fuck are they? What the fuck have they done, they just run a fucking blog thats all…nothing really groundbreaking…this one is for Kotaku…

whatta reply by SA… lol.. such and such here forth hence blatant this that.. lol

as for this whole issue. i agree with all of you… but somehow.. well… even this whole agenda will bring more publicity to the game…

+ i reckon nerd male figures find it hard to take a nice biological female gunning them down in their own business. She is good at what she does.. one up for that.. she knows the game well, she puts her cards well… and thats what counts….

on top of that the game itself is as perfect as a Mother’s Recipe Joey’s Pizza…. and Jade is the extra topping.. even if it wasnt there, the pizza would have tasted great anyways…

Exactly, the first time I heard about Assassin’s Creed and saw the videos, and was told that it was being made by the guys that made TSoT, I was hooked. Jade came much later, and yes, it was hard to focus on the game and the good looking girl with the most cheerful smile you ever saw, but the game takes priority over everything else. Always. A gamer is a gamer. Doesn’t matter if you’re a guy or a girl. Sure, girls are rarer, but with attitudes like this, it’s a small wonder. The very fact that you are a gamer should be more than enough. Once you enter a game, your sex has nothing to do with your experience on- or off-line.

What a waste of artistic talent that someone who can draw so well chose to do something like this. I get the message he was trying to convey, but this just wasn’t the way to do it.

SA.com and Jade are just two bystanders that got shot in the firefight, sadly. Amazing thing is, the last time I checked, it looks like DA still hasn’t pulled the comic from the user’s gallery in question, in spite of all of this negative publicity. Someone should take that down before more people start saving it to their hard drives.

What is buying Creed got to do with Jade anyway?! Even if Gabe Newell was super-hot and all and me gay, I wouldn’t be touching any of Half-Life 2 with a 10 foot pole (pun totally unintended, and DEEPLY regretted) if it wasn’t good!

Let me just get a hang of this. There is a game which I am gonna play with a keyboard and mouse which’s got these animated characters, and then there’s this very likeable person promoting the game in the real world…and the connection is…..what?

I mean, you say the Mona Sax model is hot and “You know I heard about this…ahem…well…thing that you could do…” and “…that’s the reason I bought Max Payne 2…”, well…there’s something there! :P Jade is the producer of Assassin’s Creed. Yeah, boy now read my lips..real-slow. P-R-O-D-U-C-E-R. Got it? Good.

Makes me wonder what will happen when more girls start buying into CS and HALO…if ever. Sonsabitches. Yeah that’s your mum I’m talking about!

Addendum: Guess none of those idiots would have had the patience to read this far anyway…anyhoo, got it out of my system. :P

This article skews reality just as bad as the rest.

The fact of the matter is, Jade Raymond has done far more for Assassin’s Creed and UbiSoft as public relations than as a producer.

To compare her to Gabe Newell or Frank O’Connor is ridiculous. She’s spent 3-5x as much time in front of a camera (a conservative estimate) running her mouth about AC as either Gabe or Frank for their games.

Her credentials as a producer are equally ridiculous. “The Sims: Online” and “There” by There Inc, published by There Inc. Why exactly would Ubisoft make her the producer of a AAA title when her resume consists of two massive failures and some programming?

The only other real job she’s had is hosting/doing interviews for Electric Playground on G4 and as a presenter at the GDA ceremony. Nothing that suggests she actually produced Assassin’s Creed.

And then there’s the matter of how she manages to continue working for G4 on Electric Playground when she’s supposed to be producing a game…which is more than a 40 hour a week job.

Ubisoft isn’t stupid. They hired her to look pretty and talk about the game, the thing she’s best at. They simply aren’t going to put the producer of “The Sims Online” and “There” in charge of a AAA title.

  • Krishnan Rajagopal Says:
    November 18th, 2007 at 12:13 pm

Yes, she is the face of Assassin’s Creed. Patrice Desilets also, to some extent. But the fact remains that whether Ubi hired Jade just for the PR and the pretty face or not, it was tasteless for the artist to get the message to Ubisoft by making such a comic out of her.

Sure, some people might say “If you play with fire, you’re gonna get burned” but it’s always Somebody’s Else Problem until it happens to you. With more and more attractive women entering the gaming arena, this just sets a bad example to a female who’s become the face of the game.

That wasn’t a direct comparison of Jade with Gabe, Frank or anyone else, but what’s going to happen now when Valve starts thrusting Portal’s Kim Swift next into the field? Will it be Jade redux? PR face or actual producer, she’s just doing her job. Don’t shoot the messenger, that’s the whole point of it all!

I am not with Ubisoft in sending that notice to SA. That was a boneheaded move on their part, since threatening legal action usually just gets you into a lot of trouble and earns you bad karma with the community. I support the artist’s right to express himself, but only as long as its done right. Freedom of speech can only go so far. Best Ubi just closes this matter altogether and focuses their attention on fixing what’s broken with the game, instead of earning themselves PR they don’t really need at this point.

    November 18th, 2007 at 12:27 pm

I have no doubt that she is qualified for the job… but Ubisoft DID pimp her in front of the Journalists and the gamers, and they know it.

Your examples are also flawed. In the case of HL2, Gabe was always in the background, and had someone else talk about HL2.

Don’t get me wrong, Jade has a right to take charge, she’s the PRODUCER for AC, but every single time it came to talk about AC, it was always Jade this, and Jade that.

Anyways, that’s how I feel about it. Great article, BTW.

  • Jackele Says:
    November 18th, 2007 at 12:30 pm

So as far as I can see, the comic was only meant to point out somewhat shameless promotion from Ubisoft of Assassin’s Creed, through Ms. Raymond. Although it was in poor taste, i get the idea that the author wasn’t trying to degrade Ms. Raymond directly. He was obviously completely insensitive and inconsiderate to all innocent parties involved…

What I’m more concerned about is the intensive faith that is shown to somethingawful by its users. Something I noticed was how there were no complaints about Ms. Raymond’s behaviour before this, but as soon as SA were seen to (even if they did not consent to the comic being posted) take a stance its huge band of followers all nodded in agreement, seemingly regardless of content.

I think promotion of SA and Lowtax, which have been taken a notch above rival sites have created this blind faith in the site by some users - both “the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny” and “ebaumsworld.com” (although both being fantastic flash movies) at least subliminally promote SA and its chief editor.

Call me a n00b, but i think what this article talks about is the result of this “faith” that i’ve just described.

It’s called standing up for something you believe in, and I just wrote a little rant on something *I* personally believe in. That’s about it. For me, getting to the play the game without any problems and enjoying a great story and some great gameplay is all that matters. As it should to everyone else as well. If saying something you believe in is “lame” then yeah, I guess I probably am.

Besides WHATS WRONG WITH SEX???? Why do Americans have such an issue about it. Sex is MUCH healthier than war and there is so much more positive karma attached to it. Would Jade have reacted the same if she was dressed in a Pic with Altar’s clothes disembowling babies? I doubt it.

I think what you failed to point out was the inconsistency and hypocrisy in their lawsuit. When the cartoon of Pierre‑Arnaud Lambert sucking cock to convince gamers to buy “Rayman: Raving Rabbids” appeared on the SA forums, Ubisoft didn’t lift one finger to protect his virtue. Where is the justice in that?

They must have realised beforehand that putting a very attractive woman in front of their game in such a male-dominated audience would have elicited just this kind of response, which leads me to believe that they are either a) just that fucking stupid or b) milking the controversy for all that it’s worth. I have to say that I disagree, UbiSoft totally exploited her and sold the game partially on her appearance (something that was completely unnecessary). I’ve never seen a game where the promotion, design and gameplay were all covered by the same person - she literally was at all the PR promotions for this game. Ubisoft knew that hey well we can increase PR on this game by using the already sexy producer..so they used her, and they went with it.

While I think the pics are bizarre and probably a bit much, especially considering that it’s a demeaning - I think that they should settle amicably because SA is the audience that they are targeting with this game, and you never want to offend/hurt the audience you’re selling to.

Come on, like others have stated, the game didn’t sell on her. I have been waiting for this game for awhile now, as have a lot of other people. I bought the game because it looks incredible, and IS incredible. Whether or not the producer is hot, that has no value on my opinion of the game, and whether or not I decide to buy it.

    1) Ubisoft is mad at Something Awful for a picture of a naked girl photoshopped to have jade’s face.

    2) There was a comic going being distributed at SA. But the article and several comments here are wrong to the origin. The art was immediately recognizable as the guy who draws chugworth academy.

    3) Look at this picture: http://www.ukresistance.co.uk/pics4/jade_raymond_and_team1.jpg

I’m sure that the people that actually put in the hard work in developing this title were thrilled how they have to stand 3 feet away from Jade. Or better yet, the guys who were blocked by her face. I could go onto how they put the black guy and the asian girl(look how much passive rage she has) in the front so they give the appearance of being a diverse company.

    4) Jade is a figurehead. As a producer, if you have no idea of the game mechanics during interviews. what other message does this send?

The photoshopped nude image was obviously over the line. But the cartoon? Nah, it really did represent what jade was doing/what Ubisoft paid Jade to do…metaphorically whoring herself so that gaming nerds would buy the game/give it good reviews/defend her on the internet. You also have to remember Ubisoft was the same company to bring together “FragDolls”.

    from (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frag_Dolls):
“The Frag Dolls are a group of girl gamers recruited and employed by Ubisoft with the aim of promoting women in gaming as well as Ubisoft’s games. The Frag Dolls are all avid gamers; they are also attractive women, which gains them negative as well as positive press attention”

It doesn’t take that great of a leap of logic to realize that Ubisoft is doing the same thing. Exploitation of gender to drive up their sales… Equality my ass.

It’s Something Awful. I think everyone knows that they don’t take themselves (or the Goons) particularly seriously. If it was hosted (not just linked to) by IGN then maybe the suit would be justified. Grow a thicker skin.

Its not even about creating a high minded debate about Women in the Gaming Industry, and the lack thereof. So what if Ubisoft marketed her, she’s the lead producer and being attractive is just another marketing tool, one of many that Ubisoft will use to sell their games.

This matter has been blown way out of proportion. I respect a company who is trying to defend their employees I honestly do. I do not agree with any sexual material being made that would cause harm to someones image. That being said, look at how many fake drawings there are of celebrities and other highly respected attractive females? I do not recall this much media attention going towards the producers of Gears of War, Halo 3, and so forth. Of course not, they were all male. Jade Raymond is very attractive, wether she likes it or not she is living proof that hot WOMEN play video games. There isn’t anything wrong with that by any means. She is very respected and has a great fanbase and she has a wonderfull reputation which she has rightfully earned. However, you have to take the good with the bad. I do not condone the comic that falsely portrayed her, but things of its nature are to be expected. It isn’t fair by any means, but she isn’t, by no means the only female whos image has been crudely harmed before. And, sadly she won’t be the last.

I like that Ubisoft is trying to defend her, as I said above, it is wonderful, my highest respect goes out to the company. However, I do not feel that the webmaster of the site that hosted the image should be held to blame for an image that one of their users posted. I understand that it is the webmasters responsibility to monitor the content of what is on said website. However, regarding the content in question, was it honestly an illegal drawing? How can that be? That is like saying that every time some fan draws a photo of Master Chief, Solid Snake, Mario, Zelda, etc etc, that they are violating copy right law. Yes, the content was crude and sexually degrading, but so is every fake porn image of Britney Spears, and I haven’t heard about anyone being sued over them. To sum it up, I don’t blame Ubisoft wanting the image removed, but I do believe that asking nicely would have avoided this entire situation. Ubisoft did throw the first punch and made a problem that is very easily resolved, now blown in to lawsuits and overall more money being spent and lost that wasn’t needed in the first place. Had Ubisoft asked nicely and been met with a negative response then yes, get legal, get the matter settled the hard way because being nice didn’t work. But Ubisoft jumped headfirst believing that threatening a lawsuit would gurantee the image being removed with out any hesitation over simply being polite, stern, but still respectfull.

You had a pretty poignant account of all this, up until that last line. If in her position, I’d feel just as disgusted by someone telling me to “hang in there, girl” as I would by someone lambasting my employer or exploiting my sexuality (okay…maybe that last one’s a fair cry beyond the others, but still). You’re just promoting the opposite extreme–giving her positive treatment for her sex instead of negative. And people can deny that all they want, but they won’t get my attention until they can name the last time such a profusely gushy appreciation article was written for a male designer. Was it wrong for Ubi to use her to represent the game? Of course not. But this sort of journalism is the definition of shameless.

I whole Heartedly agree with some of the Statements made in the Story. I admit she is a very Beautiful Producer and all but she was just doing her job. She was just that much more noticed because of her beauty rather than for the game she was producing. While it started out as any other Producer might the internet turned it into a Jade Raymond Story rather than about Assassins Creed.

Now I didn’t see the comic mentioned but I’m sure she has more class than that and just didn’t like being portrayed as something she is not.

The one thing I wish would have been better handled is the making of the game because i’ll Ive heard now are all the glitches in the game Perhaps her Q&A team were too busy checking her out instead of checking out the game properly.

I bought this game because of the generally brilliant job this team did of marketing the game to appear as the greatest, most fluid and intuitive game to arrive this year.

Upon purchasing the game, I was impressed. Putting aside the slight technical errors, this is the most enjoyable experience I’ve played on PS3 so far.

Congratulations Jade on a benchmark game and hang in there, we all would like to see many more games coming from your studio in the future.

Ubisoft is, gamers are, and everyone here is blowing this way out of proportion. She’s a public figure, the comic was tasteless satire, but everyone thinks that this “means something”. It means something about gamers, it means something about the community, it means something about treatment of women in gaming.

It means nothing except that the world is filled with juvenile people who have no sense of perspective. Ubisoft’s reply caused more people to see the offending comic, and its probably selling more Assassin’s Creed. Good or bad, you’re being played. You were played before and you’re being played now. Especially the white knights.

    So it does mean something!!

And then there’s obviously the perspective you seem to have that says - “I dont give a fuck.”. So why post a comment?

YOu’ll note, that the answer to that is the very reason this article was posted. An opinion! It’s free - love it or leave it. It aint being forced down your throat or up your ass!

SO whats White Knights gotta do with it? Fuck! Better to be the knight than the fucking court jester!!

Jade Raymond didn’t design the game. She was hired after the game was already conceived. The problem is Ubi is pitching her like she was head designer of this game, when she wasn’t.

    hahaha, this is funny.

i just now, by reading this article, learned who Jade Raymond is. i didn’t even know who the producer for this game was, and quite frankly i didn’t really care that much. i bought Assassin’s Creed because the GAME looked very promising, not the spokesperson or whatever.

this claim is flat-out ridiculous. funny, though.

While, what SA did was not something that a real fine gent would do, it is best if Jayde and Ubi just move on and forget about the dealie. I, for one adore Jade’s sparkly smile more than them tits. She is a pretty girl, not someone who i saw as smolderingly hot…She was never potrayed that way…

You are as thick as a plank. Canadians are as close to Americans as the Valons are to the French. Different Fingers on the same hand, and the only people that will argue the point are the Canucks and the Americans themselves.

I dont know what you are trying to say because you are too angry.

Point is : Americans love violence and despise anything Sexual. They will go crazy about two men porking each other (or a pretty girl being pornified) but drive by shootings in Detroit is kind of like … uh okay.

A friend of mine bought Assassin’s Creed the other day, and I love that game to death. I just stumbled upon this particular post and just now learned the name Jade Raymond. Of course, whenever there’s an at least semi-attractive woman involved with a game you’re going to have the scum of our species making lewd comments about her to vent their own sexual frustration. It’s sad really, but at least we can all take comfort in knowing that they’ll never reproduce…

I bought this game purely because of the opportunity to interact with a time and place that I, as a history enthusiast, have been researching for some time. Didn’t know, or even care about, the people involved in the making of it, unless they had historical credentials. However, I am not here to bring up any historical quirks of the game. As many people here have mentioned, the majority of gamers are male, and so as female game people get introduced to the community, there will be growing pains. This whole situation is unfortunate, but inevitable. People who have had a basically male dominated activity and community are just going to have to get used to females taking part in it.
Sucks for all involved, but consider them the pioneers.

All this overshadows the fact that AC is the same game experience over and over again, with a ridiculous combat system tacked onto the end. It is not the be-all end-all of gaming. It is a marginally good experience, compared to all the other clones out there.

It’s a shame the end-game involves fighting 20 guys with the same block-counter move. It insults our intelligence.

    Stick to the facts, fanboy.
