Mirror’s Edge Hands-On @ Experience EA, Mumbai

me-main.png

GCA 2008 has come and gone and we are still pretty much disappointed that we could not be there to cover the event. However, the Experience EA event in our very own backyard in Mumbai more then made up for it, what with it’s healthy dosage of upcoming AAA titles like Mirror’s Edge, Need For Speed: Undercover and FIFA 2009 bound to put a smile on the grumpiest of the gamers.

Held at the Hotel Trident in Mumbai, we got to try out many of the games that were featured at the recently concluded Game Convention Asia 2008 held in Singapore. One of the games that have had everyone spell bound for quite a while now, besides giving rise to endless debates on whether the Third Person View of the First Person View is the better choice is Mirror’s Edge. DICE, at the helm of the game, has done a radical turnaround from their award-winning Battlefield games to a totalitarian world which Faith, the game’s protagonist and other Runners like her inhabit. After having watched countless videos of Faith soaring through the roof tops, it was quite an exhilarating experience in itself to be given the control, of which we made some good use, a couple of hard landings notwithstanding.

Mirror’s Edge Comic - First Look

Mirror's Edge Comic Teaser

With more and more unique IPs like Dead Space, FaceBreaker, Mirror’s Edge, SPORE and Crysis: Warhead to show off, we’re still wondering why EA is playing the same old tunes every time we run into them. While we wait for our Red Alert 3 keys and a big, huge project coming your way real soon from EA India (Shh!), we’ve got our hands on the scans of the latest Mirror’s Edge comic from Comic-Con, thanks to Siliconera who were kind enough to upload them for the entire world to enjoy.

Sure, the ultra-mini-comic doesn’t really explain any part of the backstory or anything beyond what Faith and her fellow Runners do, running the Mirror’s Edge on rooftops hundreds of feet above the ground, but this is just a small teaser of what’s to come from Wildstone and Mirror’s Edge writer Rhianna Pratchett, daughter of the legendary Discworld series’ Terry Pratchett, who’s worked on games such as Heavenly Sword and Overlord.

The remaining six parts of the Mirror’s Edge comic will be released before the game ships sometime in Winter 2008.

Battlefield: Bad Company India Launch Party Pictures

1.EA India presentation.jpg

The easy going folks down in Bangalore like to believe that their Mumbai cousins have a daily dose of adrenaline in form of hanging on to the footboard of the local trains during their morning commute. However, it seems like the craving for more of it is what drove them to the Battlefield: Bad Company India launch party held at Khar Gymkhana, Mumbai on 25th June, that featured a paintball competition for the attendees. The winning teams got to walk away with some colorful splotches, a couple of angry looking welts as well copies of Gold edition of the game for the PS3.

All we can do in the meantime is shake our fists in protest and gaze at the pictures, after the jump.

Battlefield: Bad Company - X360 Demo Impressions

For those who haven’t been put-off by the negative publicity that DICE’s latest console-only offering managed to garner, June 5th is the day to look forward to as Battlefield: Bad Company (BFBC) will be having a demo on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. The demo has already been out in the wild a full week in advance for all those who have pre-ordered the game. But thanks to EA, we managed to get our hands on it to see if the game will be able to earn back the goodwill that the Battlefield games have traditionally enjoyed.

The demo offers you a chance to test out both the multiplayer, as well as the single player aspects of the game. Being a Battlefield game and all, we promptly dove right in to multiplayer to see if the game stood a chance of standing up against Call of Duty 4 (COD4), the reigning king when it comes to online warfare. Jumping into a multiplayer match was easy and intuitive enough. Even though from India, the connection was established within minutes and we were prompted to choose our class. You have a selection of all the usual modern warfare classes such as Assault, Reconnaissance, Support and Demolition. Each class comes with its own unique weapon loadout that dictates what role will each play on the battlefield.

Battlefield: Bad Company

Come Friday and we normally sneak out early off work, go some place and get drunk. Thankfully, we still had not managed to sneak off and get ourselves drunk silly when we realized that we have stumbled upon a treasure trove of sorts. In the next few hours, we will give up on the bottle for a while and keep updating you with more juicy details of the game, at least until EA decides to send some lawyers our way. If this has got the Battlefield fans salivating all over their keyboard already, hit the jump to whet your appetite with a look at the Achievement list for the Xbox 360 version of the game and know for yourself why the much talked about Trophy system won’t be seen in the PS3 version.

Update: EA India has kindly asked us to remove the Achievement List for the time being. When we’re given proper notification, we’ll go ahead and put it right back up. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Heroes of Bad Company

Carpet Bombin' ahoy!

Nowadays, in the near-constant, almost grinding hunt for something awesome to watch – be it a movie, a trailer or what not - I usually end up finding myself revisiting old videos from yesteryear; videos that in one way or another, inspired in many different ways a variety of childhood memories and daydreams. One of these videos is the original Battlefield 1942 Intro movie, a classic that has against all odds withstood the test of time.

Battleships patrol these waters. May mercy be to those that dare trespass

The Cinematic was made nearly 5 years ago, in the by-gone era when Team Fortress Classic was still relatively well-known and the Pentium IIIs were slowly starting to be retired. While CGI was hardly unheard of then, to see such quality in a game’s intro cinematic was rare – rarer still was the game ever good enough to back it up (at least, in terms of how it played). What caught the viewer most about the trailer though, was the music. The simple, constant beat and rhythm it possesses can lead most persons – even those normally unfamiliar with the series – to recognize where it’s from. I still have the soundtrack – a precious gem closely guarded in the shallow – yet murky - depths of my MP3 player.
