Demo Impressions: Tomb Raider Underworld

tru 2008-11-09 23-55-21-52.jpg

After having broken many of the first details on Tomb Raider Underworld, we’ve spent many an hour just running through Legend and Anniversary again and again, waiting for the day when we’d actually get our hands dirty with the new Lara Croft experience, which is exactly what the recently released demo allowed us to do.

A lot has changed in Underworld since Lara went berserk on Amanda and ran off to stop an impending catastrophe in Legend. Old foes, greater mysteries, harder puzzles and a tougher Lara, all dutifully take their place amongst the wonderfully detailed game world rendered brilliantly by the new engine. (Also rumoured to be powering the upcoming Deus Ex 3) But it isn’t just the engine that’s managed to get an overhaul - Lara herself has gotten an extreme makeover to win the hearts of next generation gamers – sporting a firmly toned athletic “Hot Mommy” body, a much more grittier look (modelled after gymnast Alison Carroll, who takes over from Karima Adebibe) and yes, to answer the burning question, quite sensible breasts.

Next Tomb Raider Game Well Under Way

Tomb Raider

I’ve forgotten how many times I’ve played the recent Tomb Raider games, Legend and Anniversary. After getting completely disillusioned with the franchise, thanks to Angel of Darkness, I was more than satisfied with Crystal Dynamics’ take on Lady Lara Croft’s adventures even though the puzzle elements left a big huge gap in Legend, (not so bad with Anniversary). And for those that were eagerly awaiting Eidos’ announcement at E2 2007 about the next game in the series in vain, there’s hope yet.

Talking to SPOnG.com, Eidos’ Ian Livingstone talked about how the next game in the series was already “Well in development” and said that the third Tomb Raider movie adaptation hasn’t yet been given the green signal yet, while gushing all over Angelina Jolie. Considering the cliffhanger with which Legend ended, and the seemingly obvious ties to the Atlantean storyline in Anniversary, the next game is something I just can’t wait for. On the other hand, if you don’t have any other console except a Wii, enjoy the first look at the Wii edition of Tomb Raider: Anniversary, which, according to senior producer Morgan Gray “adds more tomb raider to Tomb Raider”. Xbox 360 owners can expect to see Tomb Raider: Anniversary as Downloadable Content on Xbox Live sometime next month, whereas PSP, PS2 and PC owners can rush out right now and pick up their copies at stores, if you haven’t already done so.

The Deus Ex Phoenix Rises

We all know how a lot of games keep getting remade now that the next-generation consoles are here to stay. Well, one game that’s rumoured to be getting the same treatment as Tomb Raider is none other than Warren Spector and Ion Storm’s masterpiece FPS-RPG hybrid, Deus Ex. Talking to the Canadian channel MusiquePlus, Eidos Montreal’s head honcho, Patrick Melchior confirms that the Montreal studio’s first assignment is already at work on a new Deus Ex game. While it is not known whether the game will be a “reimagining” like the upcoming Tomb Raider: Anniversary or a new game that continues the story from the end of Invisible War, all we can really care about is that soon we will be able to play a new game in the franchise that, along with System Shock 2, literally pushed FPSes into a new direction long before games like Bioshock were even envisioned. Hell, if all else fails and they screw it up, there’s always the Deus Ex High Definition Texture Pack to give us hours upon hours of quasi-Christian exposition and blazing gun violence!
