PSE Calls Bangalore

After being royally ignored countless number of times, Bangalore finally got its first and much deserved gaming expo in a long time. After wowing the gamers in Mumbai, the PlayStation Experience (PSE) in Mumbai, it moved down south to Bangalore, much to the delight of us gamers here. Held at the Kormangala Indoor Stadium, PSE boasted of an impressive set up that allowed the general public access to a lot of PS3, PS2 and PSP titles, some already out in the market and some just waiting to hit the shelves. The show floor was divided into different zones showcasing different genres of video games from the PS3’s roster.

Doing it Retro: Capcom Classics Collections for PSP

Doing it Retro! A Look at the Capcom Classics Collections for PSP.

Whoa, feels like forever since we did one of these. Fear not! For on this special occasion, we’ll be highlighting two classic compilations of both popular and obscure arcade/console titles for the PSP. Nothing quite says “I Wuv You” like playing a bunch of old games, some of which you’ve probably never even heard of, and being able to whip them out wherever on the go. Of course, the PSP is no stranger to compilations of this nature (See: Gradius Collection, Metal Slug Anthology, Namco Museum Collection), but what makes Capcom’s Classics Collections packages especially groovy is the deluxe offering of more than a dozen notable ports and a bevy of extra unlockables, such as artwork, music and all the unlimited continues you can possibly stomach. And thanks to the recent partnership forged by Milestone Interactive, both Remixed and Reloaded editions are readily available in today’s Indian retailers at the asking price of Rs. 1499 each.

Hit the jump for a complete listing of what games are included, as well as some personal bantering.

Remixed Edition: Captain Commando

REMIXED Edition

  • 1941: Counter Attack
  • Avengers
  • Bionic Commando
  • Black Tiger
  • Block Block
  • Captain Commando
  • Final Fight
  • Forgotten Worlds
  • Last Duel
  • Legendary Wings
  • Magic Sword
  • Mega Twins
  • Quiz & Dragons
  • Section Z
  • Side Arms: Hyper Dyne
  • The Speed Rumbler
  • Street Fighter
  • Strider
  • Three Wonders
  • Varth
  • Reloaded Edition: Knights of the Round

    RELOADED Edition

  • 1942
  • 1943
  • 1943 Kai
  • Commando
  • Eco Fighters
  • Exed Exes
  • Ghosts ‘n Goblins
  • Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
  • Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
  • Gun.Smoke
  • The King of Dragons
  • Knights of the Round
  • Mercs
  • Pirate Ship Higemaru
  • SonSon
  • Street Fighter II
  • Street Fighter II: Champion Edition
  • Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting
  • Vulgus
• Conversely, you may notice some flickering issues and load times, but these problems are to be expected given the PSP’s limitations. All games feature wireless multiplayer ad-hoc support, while a select few games also come with single-disc sharing options (Mercs, for example). There’s even a way to upload your high scores via infrastructure mode, which I’m sure will be wonderful news for die-hard arcade purists. You can even alter the screen size to accommodate a vertical view for your shoot em’ up needs.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s cut to the chase: both collections are very nicely done, so if you ever find yourself at odds on which version you should pick up, don’t. Your experience won’t deter from owning only one of these precious compilations, but if you can find it in your heart (and your wallet) to do so: grab each of them up. Aside from that, there are some nagging issues. Firstly, both packages were published and sold outside of India for more than two years ago. While it may sound like an oxymoron to call a compilation title “old”, I can’t help but wonder if Milestone could’ve lowered the price of admission to a sweet Rs. 999. Maybe then, less people would hesitate on which edition they’d like to own and end up picking both! Heck, I know I would.

My other issue is the choice of included games. While its fantastic to see newer gamers introduced to the likes of Bionic Commando, Commando, and the 1940s series (especially when you consider their next-gen HD makeovers are just floating around the corner), I have to question Capcom’s decision to include not one but three versions of the original Street Fighter II. Granted, it’s a timeless classic, but I’m willing to bet more than enough people in India have played it and wouldn’t need to see what the big deal was behind Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting. Would it not have been wiser to do what was done with the console edition and simply add Super Street Fighter II Turbo on there? The mind boggles.

Aside from that, you’d be doing yourself a geeky disservice in not considering in obtaining at least one of these compilations. Thanks to Hardcore Gaming 101 for the above arcade game images, be sure to check out the site’s Capcom Beat-em-ups page for more information on certain titles.

India Gets Love From Capcom, Bethesda

Looks like somebody up there (or down here) finally decided to have some pity on Indian gamers without an Internet connection, a credit card, a Play-Asia account and oh, about 3 weeks of patience. Or in some cases, way longer. After having ignored the country for a long time, except for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition on the Xbox 360, Jap videogame giant Capcom have tied up with local distribution giant Milestone Interactive to bring all their upcoming and back catalog titles to the country.

While the distribution would initially stick to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the PSP platforms, Milestone says they would also be offering PC and PlayStation 2 titles somewhere down the line. The back catalog, which currently includes hot property such as Dead Rising, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition and Devil May Cry 4 will be available starting this week at stores all over the country, with newer games such as MotoGP ‘08, Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 being available in accordance with the international street dates for these titles.

Duke Nukem To Kick Ass on PSP, DS

    Duke Nukem Trilogy

We’re still waiting for Forever, but here’s some relief to soothe the pain and eternal anguish we’ve been enduring as we wait for the King of Kick-Ass and Smutty Babes to return. After having been long forgotten, Apogee Software is all set to worm their way back into gaming by reviving a legacy catalog of over 30 titles, as well as working with new developers to create what we assume will be new IPs.

And what better way to kick start the whole thing than with Duke himself? And at E3 2008! According to Apogee’s Terry Nagy and Scott Miller, the company, working with 3D Realms and MachineWorks Northwest LLC, will be producing the Duke Nukem Trilogy for release on the PSP and the DS, comprised of three new missions – Critical Mass, Chain Reaction and Proving Grounds.

The episodes will be released sequentially, with the first one appearing sometime in Summer 2009, and according to the massive feature list on the Apogee website, will include:

    • 9 Different World Locations
    • 36 Action-Packed Levels
    • 3D Accelerated Graphics
    • 3D Characters with Detailed Textures
    • Real-Time Particle and Lighting Effects
    • Multi-Mode Play with up to 5 Different Styles of Game Play Action
    • Multi-Player Action
    • Total Ass-Kicking Weapons

Frankly, as long as we can carry Mr. Arnold Toilet Mouth around on our handheld and squish alien piggy cops, we’re happy. Of course, if you don’t own a PSP or a DS, you could rather just wait for DNF to show up. And wait. And wait…

    PSP Is Teh Evil!

Another family broken... thanks to the PSP

They usually say that when Judgment Day is near, we’ll see a lot of signs pointing to the Antichrist. So for all those who doubt that the PSP is it, first, we get news from Famitsu that the PSP is (surprisingly!) outselling the DS at least as far as this year is concerned. Then, two French exchange students in London get stabbed more than 250 times (one 80 times after he was dead) so that the perps can get away with two unbelievably rare and more-expensive-than-the-Kohinoor-diamond black PSPs. And if that don’t prove it, we’ve got the PSP wreaking havoc with lives here as well, and worse, we’re the ones who started it all.

When Abhinav’s friend got married a couple of months back, he decided that nothing would be better than blessing the happy couple (and the husband in particular) with a PSP. Talking about the London murders last night, Abhinav mentions that the couple, who’ve been enjoying a textbook romance, recently got into their first major fight. Over the PSP, and this time, it wasn’t the usual complaint we’re used to seeing.

Iron Man On PSP: What A Waste!

Maybe, just maybe, we made a huge mistake by going in for the Iron Man on the PSP right after having finished playing the excellent God Of War: Chains Of Olympus (GoW:CoO). While GoW:CoO embodies everything that a perfect game on the PSP should be, Iron Man sadly, turns out to be the exact opposite. The game seems to be a dismal failure right from the word go. A2M, the developers of the game seem to have got everything wrong as far as Iron Man for the PSP is concerned. So much so that it becomes quite clear right from the moment you pop in the disk that this is one game you won’t be playing for long, unless you happen to be an unfortunate reviewer like us who have to clench their teeth and bear through the 13 odd missions that the game throws at you.

Milestone Offers PSP Slim/Chains of Olympus Bundle

How Kratos does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie-Pop?

Whatever Latino Kratos says, Latino Kratos means well. Milestone Interactive just so happens to be offering a kinky pre-order deal for those who have been looking for an excuse to pick up a PSP Slim & Lite (or two, if your name is Scrooge McDuck). Not only will you be cashing on what’s already the best playing PSP action game to come out in like forever, but in addition to that – you’ll also be chain-combo-ing yourself a Kratos action figure as well. Just what the mad doctor prescribed!

Thanks to Sameer for the enlightening news.
