“Think someone could spend half their life in a slam with a horse bit in their mouth and not believe? Think he could start out in some liquor store trash bin with an umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and not believe? Got it all wrong, holy man. I absolutely believe in God… And I absolutely hate the fucker.”
If you had watched the 2000 sci-fi film Pitch Black, you may remember this line. It gives you a small peek into the harsh upbringing and violent streak of one of the best anti-heroes in the gaming world – Richard B. Riddick. This was also the first time that the character of Riddick was introduced to the world. Four years after Pitch Black a second movie called “The Chronicles of Riddick” was released and this time it was accompanied by a game based on the lead protagonist of the movie – Riddick. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay released on the Xbox and a little later on the PC. The game turned out to be sleeper hit on the Xbox and even though it was highly acclaimed on the PC, the sales were pretty low. The lack of any kind of promotion for the PC version, save for an odd trailer probably was one of the reasons for the low sales. I wasn’t even aware of the game and happened to pick up the game on an impulse. I came to know it was a movie-based game and I was initially skeptical considering how movie based games always turned out to be mediocre efforts and were mere cash-ins, but I was absolutely blown away when I started playing the game. The game turned out to be a lot of fun and had a great blend and balance of various gameplay elements supported by a good story, amazing voice acting, a great atmosphere and superb visuals. To date it remains one of my favorite PC games of all time.
And the fight is finished! We’ve thought about this long and hard and we’ve finally decided upon the winners of our Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack contest, which entitles two lucky blokes to download the upcoming Mythic Map Pack for Halo 3 (costing 800 Microsoft Points) for the awesome price of free! We received well over fifty entries for just two codes, and we selected these two images because, well, they were just so damn artistic, something that we feel wouldn’t be out of place even on the back of the Halo 3 box! Without further ado, I give you your winners, Brett Sams (GT: A pIastic bag) and Paul Hoang (GT: jEEborz). Take it away, guys!
Food, water, air, shelter, Killzone 2 – which seems to be the new updated list of what people need to stay alive and not curl up into a tight little ball and die from heartbreak and neglect. Just as news comes pouring in that the most eagerly awaited game of all time on the PS3 has officially broken street date and is ending up on game shelves everywhere in Dubai and Pakistan, we get some shocking news of what’s happening right in our backyard. With tensions running high between India and her next door neighbour, obviously, we can’t have them lording it over us about how they’re playing Killzone 2 and we aren’t. Well, fear no more, for India has followed suit and is breaking the street date as of right bloody now, with copies of the game being made available in all major cities starting from today.
And the best part is, it’s all official. With gamers in the country beating down the doors of the regional SCE distributors and threatening to cancel their pre-orders and take their business to the gray markets, Sony India and Milestone Interactive have done pretty much the only thing they could to save their business – break the street date officially and get the game out to starving fans a day or two before they’ll be available for sale in teeny tiny stores in a crowded alleyway. Talk about flipping the gray market off big time! Although we knew about it as soon as news of the Dubai leaks reached us, we were asked to keep our mouths shut until an official press release could be whipped up explaining what the heck was going on. Which, incidentally, also explains why we rushed to get our single player review of the game out the door a week before schedule.
Hit the jump for the official press release.
UPDATE #2: The game is now available in India. Check here for more information.
UPDATE: We spoke with the distributor, who said that there was a minor unforeseeable delay, and that the game has already been despatched to all metros and should be available on shelves by Saturday (6/12) morning at the latest. If you don’t live in a metro, expect to find the game at your favourite game outlet by Monday (8/12) or Tuesday (9/12).
When Calvin once asked why the world couldn’t even be unfair in his favour, he would’ve been really happy if he was one of those thousands of people who were left confused, heartbroken and angry after news emerged that GTA IV for the PC could get delayed in the country.
And, to add to one of those rare occasions where we are the bearer of good news, it looks like you really wouldn’t have to wait after all if you were planning to drive Mr. Bellic around town on your monster PC. So yes, the game is coming out on December 3rd, as originally planned and yes, it will be available at the previously mentioned low, low price of INR 499, so there’s really no excuse not to buy one copy for playing and one NRFB copy for a keepsake, like someone I know is planning to do.
And for all those people who were getting increasingly paranoid over the game’s SecuROM DRM software, (yours truly included) it looks like things aren’t as bad as they are with EA’s games. Head over here for a 2-page interview by PC Games Hardware with Rockstar where every detail about the relaxed DRM mechanism in use by GTA IV PC is revealed.
[STORY UPDATED: Consider this story old, squashed and curb-stomped upon. It looks like the thousands of GTA IV gamers who bombared our inboxes about this news would actually not have to worry about waiting ages for the game or importing it from elsewhere. The game will be made available on December 3rd and will retail for INR 499. Check this story here for more information.]
Back in the days when the World War II genre was dying a slow death, with no COD4 in sight to revive it, the first Brothers In Arms title came like a fresh whiff or air, bringing with it real battlefield tactics and allowing you to step in the boots of a real commander. Nearly three years after the first in the series, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 tasted critical and commercial success, Gearbox Studios readies Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway (BiA:HH) to storm our consoles and PC in glorious HD. The ANGRY Pixel got it hands on PC preview code of BiA:HH to get a first hand taste of what the game has in store for us.
Yes, we’ve all heard this one and there have been over 650 pages of discussion about this at the GTA IV forums, but finally, we can break our six-month silence and echo Rockstar and the entire Internet in welcoming GTA IV for the PC this November. Yes, we’ve known that the game was coming to the PC in November for quite a long time now, along with some really juicy information on the new Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: Underworld (I love gymnastic coaches!), but we couldn’t open our mouths thanks to a painful embargo and a whole lotta guns pointed at us.
But teasers aside, GTA IV will finally see the light of day on PC come November 18 in North America and November 21 across Europe. When the game will be made available to the hapless Indian gamer is not certain, but the local distributor in-charge of the license assures us that it will be here “on par with the international street date” and that it will be priced very competitively – a fact that is being looked at with open hostility by the console gamers here, who had to wait an eternity for the game to be available here, most of whom got their copies from the gray market at obscene price points.
While there’s still no word on the official system requirements or whether the DLC will be made available to PC owners for free, as is usually the case with such games, Xbox 360 and PS3 GTA IV fans will have quite a bit of love coming their way – now with the Millionaires Club, soon with the “Viral Infection” zombie mode and a fresh DLC to boot. And for those still trying to figure out the new Ms. Croft, watch out for the lovely Ms. ****** ******* (are we counting the stars, Alice?) at the upcoming Leipzig Games Convention. Cheers!
For fans of Dead Space that have been eagerly awaiting the next instalment of the wonderfully crafted animated comic, EA has finally released the next episode in the series which continues the gruesome story of the Marker, the Unitology conspiracies and the shocking mass-suicides and takes it one step further with the beginnings of horror, betrayal and infection. With just two more comics and the Downfall movie to go over the next three months, Issue 04 opens the gates of Hell as Marla finally figures out how “death is the key” just as the Ishimura inititates planetcrack, marking the beginning of the end and unleashing the Necromorph infestation, accompanied by the obligatory creepy-as-hell soundtrack.
The 130 MB animated comic is available for download in MP4 format from the Dead Space servers here. (Right click, select Save Target As)
Expect a full-fledged review of the issues so far and its evolution as soon as we manage to get our hands on the actual print comics themselves. Soon.
With all the hue and cry over Crysis and all of us looking to October for Far Cry 2, it seems like the original has been all but forgotten except for a handful of people who still struggle to create content for it. In a spectacular show of proving how CryENGINE can hold its own against its newest competitors, the good folks at the Delta Sector mod have finally managed to release their little baby into the wild, complete with lush vegetation, falling snow and brilliant lightning.
Packing three singleplayer maps – The Arrival, Frozen Paths and Infiltration – and two team deathmatch maps into the 347 MB download, Delta Sector seems like a great reason for us to dust off that old Far Cry DVD and see if it still works. At least, for those of us that aren’t able to run the super high-def Crysis in all its DX10 glory.
Having enjoyed almost a year’s lead time on the PC and the PS3, the all-time favorite twitch shooter, Unreal Tournament III, has finally made it to the Xbox 360 in India, a fact we wouldn’t even be aware of if not for a chance conversation with the distributor. Less than three weeks after its global launch on the Microsoft platform, Unreal Tournament III is now available (in limited quantities, so get yours ASAP) across stores for INR 2799, which makes this the highest priced official Xbox 360 title to be released in the country yet.
The Xbox 360 version of the game has 5 exclusive maps, 2 exclusive characters, all the DLCs released so far and a splitscreen multiplayer mode, but unfortunately, doesn’t have any support for the keyboard and mouse or user-made content, thanks to Microsoft’s bitchiness when it comes to custom content. The only question is, has it been worth the long wait for Xbox 360 gamers? We’ll answer that one in our review, coming soon, complete with a Necris DarkWalker standing outside your door in case you disagree with us.
