GamingIndians’ Playstation Experience Report

Playstation Experience Report

Whoever said Microsoft was the only one serious about hosting game events to promote their flagship console baby, should check out Sameer’s excellent hand-on report on Sony’s Playstation Experience in Mumbai - which include dozens of pictures and even some shaky-cam style video clips. My one and only favorite! Man, now I wanna see one of these in Delhi too. But they better not make me have to sit in those retardedly small go-karts, or have me sit on the floor to play a bunch of friggin’ shooters. And would’ve it killed the event organizers to throw in extra controller for the games that had support for it? Make it so, Sony, make it so!

Update: Wow, it looks like one of our own attended the event as well! Even though Roshan couldn’t make it because of a bad mushroom-induced fever, his sister Mary D’Silva was nice enough to do his job and enjoy herself at the event with Need For Speed: ProStreet, MotorStorm, Ratchet & Clank: Deadlocked and good ol’ Resistance. Pity she couldn’t get her hands on Uncharted or R&C Future: Tools of Destruction, thanks to some spoilsports that stuck to the gaming stations like leeches. And no, before you ask, she didn’t embarrass herself by playing SingStar! And she took PICS, YAY! Thanks, Mary!

Hit the jump for the pictures.

God of War PSP Screenshot Frenzy

God of War: Chains of Olympus

With more and more confusion reigning supreme on the home console front, I still think the PSP is one of the best purchasing decisions I’ve ever made in my life. A face that got reinforced ten times over, thanks to Ready At Dawn’s spellbinding God of War: Chains of Olympus demo.

Reggie’s already got the dirt on the dirt on the demo, and since I really can’t add much more to it without sounding like a hyperventilating, pheromone oozing teenage girl on her first date, I’ll just shut up and post screenshots we’ve managed to lift straight off the game. Feel free to kill yourself after seeing the framegrabs and wishing you hadn’t blown a staggering twenty thousand bucks on a lousy 21″ HDTV instead of spending it on a PSP. Or a DS. Or two thousand donuts. Or twenty high quality blowjobs… Hit the jump to take a look at what could very well be the killer app for Sony’s handheld platform, especially if this too happens to have a mini sex game.

God of War : Chains of Olympus demo out!

Yeah, the killer app for the PSP looks good. I’ve played the demo and I’m a believer. After impressing me so massively with Daxter, Ready At Dawn studios have done it yet again!

Gameplay Screen

GoW on the PSP looks like everything you’d expect it to be! Beautiful and alive backgrounds, hordes of enemies coming at you wave after wave, the frenzied slash-and-maim action that we love so much, gruesome and bloody deaths and Kratos’ STFU-or-I’ll-shove-this-blade-down-your-throat-and-rip-out-your-intestines attitude.

Indian Gaming Industry to be worth $700 million in next 5 years

To all the nay-sayers who think there ain’t no way the gaming situation here can ever improve on our home turf, well, you may be right! But one thing’s for sure, it can only continue growing and that’s largely thanks to the efforts of companies like Microsoft and Sony. According to Rajesh Jain (Executive Director of KPMG), “The main drivers for the growth of the gaming industry in India would be seeding initiatives by the players, marketing, and pricing of the games – which is an important aspect in India.” Currently India’s gaming industry is worth about $30 million right now, and that’s even including the grey market.

Jain further adds, “At the end of the day, the prices at which the games are brought is important” but also mentions that it’s not the “cost of the box” which matters, but the “cost of recurring games.” We already know Microsoft has been doing a heck of a lot of work to drive their message (with booze, no less); and thanks to the 54% decrease of the import duty imposed on game titles, you can expect to find products quite comparable or even a bit cheaper than what you would you normally find in other countries (although currently, this mostly applies to those published by Microsoft Games Studio). Even for games that haven’t even been released yet, Microsoft will sell them for approximately Rs. 1,895. Same goes for recently released PC games: you’ll find S.T.A.L.K.E.R and BioShock for less than Rs. 700. Quite the admission price!

RootShock

RootShock

If you haven’t heard of it already, news is buzzing around about the yet-another-new-controversy with BioShock; this time pertaining to fact that it apparently carries SecuROM - a rootkit that installs itself onto your computer and is used as copy protection for the game. News articles pertaining to the full details can be read here, or any other of the major gaming sites - the entire Internet’s abuzz with it from the looks of it. Currently, SecuROM is confirmed to be in both Steam and retail versions of the game, as well as in the PC demo (both Steam and independent executables), so there’s really no escaping it for PC users.

To clarify: SecuROM itself is not entirely malware. From the company’s site one can gleam that it doesn’t snoop into your computer past the CD protection. However, considering that Sony’s the one really providing the technology, such claims are at best, ambiguous, considering they have already had their asses sued over this. However, due to its nature, SecuROM can be extremely difficult to remove - it’s nearly impossible to delete it from the registry using the Registry Editor, while anti-virus programs can’t remove it either. For a quick lesson in rootkits, one can go here. For those that may want to remove the rootkit, there’s a somewhat easy method here.

Although I have several negative opinions on this move, I’ll refrain from posting it in favor of putting up pertinent information. Regarding the install issues: it appears that each individual can have at most two installs of the game running simultaneously. To install BioShock on more than 2 PCs is apperantly not possible, since you’ll have to uninstall the game, and then reinstall on the new PC. However, there have been reports that uninstall ‘credits’ aren’t working properly, creating issues for many gamers. Even worse is the fact that many can’t even install, because the 2K servers that monitored the SecuROM installs (yes, you need to be ONLINE to install the game) went offline due to the heavy load and usage. Worse still, was 2K customer support directing those that would enquire on the issue to SecuROM, while SecuROM customer support is directing them back to 2K, which is just shitty, IMHO.

Thankfully, though, it looks like 2K is doing something about it. As mentioned in an interview here, they apparently intend to get rid of the online activation eventually (although when is another matter altogether) as well as up the number of installs from 2 to 5.

However, this still does not address the issue of the rootkits in use in the first place; to mention nothing of their lack of effectiveness and the number of people its driving away instead. When, or if they’ll issue at all is something that remains to be seen.

Heavenly Sword Animated Series

Heavenly Sword - Nariko

Lady Croft hasn’t been the only one graciously dangling her nanos in cartoon celluloid, and that’s never a bad thing! Now its Ninja Theory’s turn with their very blade-wielding redhead honeycomb, Nariko from Heavenly Sword. Being done to promote the upcoming Playstation 3 exclusive launch (September 15th!), expect more of these cool animated shorts detailing about the game’s history to come in the next few days. All guaranteed to be more entertaining than the Devil May Cry anime, ho! That was Krishnan’s gag, by the way, thought it was particularly coy. Debonair, even.

Hit the jump for the first three episodes - only two more to go!

SCEA’s Deal with the Best

Godding our Wars and Cars

Now if this isn’t news, what is? David Jaffe of God of War for the PS2 and Calling All Cars (one of the more popular titles available on the Playstation network for download) and Scott Campbell, former chief director at Incognito Entertainment (who also collaborated with the former on Calling All Cars, along with co-developing the Twisted Metal Games and being involved with the tactical air and land warfare PS3 game, Warhawk) have formed the new Eat, Sleep, Play Studios and signed a multi-year deal with Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s (SCEA) Santa Monica branch to develop games under their banner.

Yesterday’s announcement, which was officially confirmed as of today, has given insight in to the first big project which is confirmed for a 2008 release. In the meantime, Eat, Sleep and Play will release Twisted Metal: Head On for the Playstation 2 in winter of this year. The release will contain brand-spanking new levels from the never before released Twisted Metal: Black Part II. The best part though, is that the core members of Incognito will still remain with their original branch to continue development on Warhawk, so that leaves two massive titles for Sony to look forward to for its platform in the future. With the support of two of the most iconic developers in the gaming industry today, Sony appears to be on the up side. Stay tuned for details on Eat, Sleep, Play’s first PS3 title.
