Review: Too Human

1.jpg

Too Human… ah… the game that was once supposed to be the Xbox 360’s big launch title, the game that was once supposed to come out on the Playstation on four discs, the game that was supposed to change the way we look at action games. Yes, there are a lot of things Too Human was supposed to be, and that’s where the problem lies because Too Human is not a bad game by any means, it’s just not the legendary title that most people expected it to be.

Let’s get some of the misunderstandings out of the way first. Contrary to what you may have heard, Too Human was not in development for ten years. Yes it was supposed to come out ten years ago but the Too Human we are playing today is not the same game. The project was put on hold while Silicon Knights churned out great games like Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes and Legacy Of KainThis Too Human has been in development for a maximum of three years. Silicon Knights also had to build a new engine from ground up because of the whole debacle with Epic Games forcing them to abandon the Unreal 3 Engine and start from the scratch.

With the history behind us, let’s get down to the actual review.

Taking a leaf out of Battlefield: Bad Company’s book, Valve has confirmed to 1up that Left 4 Dead on the Xbox 360 will have dedicated servers on Microsoft’s Live online service.

This news has brought a lot of cheer in the console community as many believe that’s the way forward, especially when we are paying close to USD 50 for Xbox Live annually. Dedicated servers translates into a better online experience with Left 4 Dead, especially when co-op happens to be the USP of the game.

Mirror’s Edge to Feature Time Trial Mode
mirrorse3.jpg

As if the game play videos of Mirror’s Edge were not enough to get us salivating all over our keyboards, developers DICE have confirmed to 1Up in an interview that the game would indeed be shipping with a time-trial mode as well which will unlock once you beat the game.

Producer Tom Ferrer explains that the time-trial mode won’t feature entire levels. Instead, the existing levels will be broken down to smaller chunks that you can have a go at until you master them. Online leaderboards will help you keep track of your as well as other gamer’s best time in that particular time-trial level.

In another cool touch, you can download ghost data from others playthroughs. This ghost data will show up in-game as a red silhouette as you watch them go through the level in their own unique way. Hopefully this will help us pick some nice tricks from the best in the business.

In the age where most of the games will find it hard to justify their INR 2000 price tags, Mirror’s Edge is fast turning out to be one game that we gamers would happily part with our lunch money for.

Mirror’s Edge Comic - First Look

Mirror's Edge Comic Teaser

With more and more unique IPs like Dead Space, FaceBreaker, Mirror’s Edge, SPORE and Crysis: Warhead to show off, we’re still wondering why EA is playing the same old tunes every time we run into them. While we wait for our Red Alert 3 keys and a big, huge project coming your way real soon from EA India (Shh!), we’ve got our hands on the scans of the latest Mirror’s Edge comic from Comic-Con, thanks to Siliconera who were kind enough to upload them for the entire world to enjoy.

Sure, the ultra-mini-comic doesn’t really explain any part of the backstory or anything beyond what Faith and her fellow Runners do, running the Mirror’s Edge on rooftops hundreds of feet above the ground, but this is just a small teaser of what’s to come from Wildstone and Mirror’s Edge writer Rhianna Pratchett, daughter of the legendary Discworld series’ Terry Pratchett, who’s worked on games such as Heavenly Sword and Overlord.

The remaining six parts of the Mirror’s Edge comic will be released before the game ships sometime in Winter 2008.

Review: Alone In The Dark (PC, Xbox 360 & Wii)

Review: Alone in the Dark

In many ways, the first Alone in the Dark game pretty much set the standard for the modern-day survival horror franchise, even if Resident Evil usually ends up taking the credit for it. Sixteen years after the original ended up scaring the bejesus out of us when we were in our teens, Eden Games, who have been consistently wowing us with racing classics like V-Rally, Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed and Test Drive Unlimited, has been passed the torch (pun very much intended) and the resulting experience in the new Alone In The Dark happens to be one wild ride through a bed of roses. And, unfortunately, a briar patch to boot.

Alone In The Dark unfolds in the city of New York as the main man, Edward Carnby, wakes up suffering from an amnesia haze in an apartment building overlooking Central Park, around which the entire game and its mysteries are based. Saved from an untimely demise by a series of otherworldly fissures or “living scars” that tear the city apart, Ed finds himself on the run from the transformed creatures to try and figure out why he’s suddenly having such a lousy day. Along the way, Ed teams up with Sarah Flores, an art dealer who seems to have traded in the usual dress code for leather jackets and Goth thigh-high boots, as they struggle to survive until sunrise in Gehenna, formerly known as NYC.

While the story, penned by Sleepers author Lorenzo Carcaterra, isn’t as tightly wound as, say, Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams, it serves as a highly engaging transport for the game’s mechanic and all the conspiracy theories surrounding Central Park – enough to make players at least want to do a decent amount of digging online. What’s confusing, however, is whether this game is actually some sort of a sequel to the original, having transported Carnby straight from 1938 to 2008 after his adventures in the Derceto mansion – a fact borne out by the Central Park EMT’s comments and the not-so-lucid endings to the game. Thankfully, the method of telling the story takes a huge deal of stress and implausibility out of actually doing it, by resorting to a DVD-style system that allows players to skip to any of the eight episodes (split across multiple scenes) that make up the storyline, in addition to rewinding or fast forwarding the game to replay a section in another way or skip one that’s causing a receding hairline.
